Group 3 Postmortem
Solitaire: Joker Edition
Solitaire Joker Edition is a game that uses the base Solitaire game framework, modifying it to add a new twist to the game, allowing the player to experience something new and unique than just playing regular solitaire. With the addition of the joker card, the game forces the player to adapt and plan out their moves more carefully than ever before.
[Game's First Draft]
The game originally would be massively modified to remove 1 row of cards, making it a total of 6 rows instead of 7, however when playtesting, there were a few issues with the game taking longer than expected as well as making it almost impossible to finish due to lack of card placements and Joker interferences. The solution was for us to either add back the 7th row, or to cut down the cards in row 6 from 6 cards to 5 cards. Ultimately, we chose to go with adding back the 7th row, allowing the game to be finished within expected time, as well as lowering the overall difficulty of the game.
[Decision for adding Joker]
While discussing about the game's modifications for adding the Joker, we came up with a few ideas. But the one that stuck to the game most was about the Joker disruptions to the card deck, forcing the player to shuffle it. Some others would be as Joker can give some power to the player such as revealing a hidden card in the row, or to flip 1 card up. But the status of the joker for being a bad card ultimately gave us the idea to make it be the bad card as intended and to ruin the player's game.
[Intended Audiences]
As for intended audiences, we went over some discussions and having a person of our family members playtest the game. With people usually under the age of 13 having trouble with the game's rules and understanding, and people above 15 having challenges due to the randomness, we decided that our age range would be PG13, with aims for mostly 15 years old or older.
[Future Improvements]
Something in the future that I'd like to improve on when making a game or designing one, would be to first create multiple drafts, testing each draft section and choosing the best one. Through using this process, I can determine which would give the best outcome for the player when they play. I'd also like to improve on the rule sheet and procedures to help guide the player through the game more smoothly. And the objective of the game should also be broader and more expanded with additions of abilities and more resources for the player to use to help finish the game.
