 Project 2

HexWar

Artillery Simulation

Group 6

-Summary-

HexWar is a game about resource management and land conquering. There will be 2 players for the game, with many different resources each must manage. The player can capture many different special elements and areas on the board to further increase their resources and improve their military strength needed to take down the other.

Iteration 1

When we first began on thinking about ideas, a few ideas stuck to our mind.
Some of which was related to having military powers as a card game, while some include the aspect of dice rolling for battles. But only one stuck, and that idea is what we used as a foundation and structure to formulate the game and reinforce upon the idea.
We took inspirations of many different games such as Sid Meier's Civilizations to formulate the game into a Artillery Hex game, where each hex represents a land similar to SIV.

We created a baseline map that include 2 bases on each side with multiple hex of colors, giving the idea of adding abilities and resources

With the addition of 3 units, we concluded with, being Infantry, Tank and Plane
We decided to add an energy meter to help prevent the players from making too many moves during the round.

Iteration 2

Through multiple game test and plays, we decided to add metal resources to the game, to further add management for creating units such as tank and planes.

But we needed to find a way for the players to collect metal, which is when we thought of using the yellow hexes shown.

The first time we added metals, it was such that each yellow hex gives a certain amount of metal once for the game.

But through different phases of testing, we determined that it would be per round to allow the game to play at a pace and requiring the player to manage their resources carefully and distributing them among their moves.

We also decided to add a money resource into the game along with metal, in which would be required to create units along with metal, as well as required to use for moving units. Furthermore, by adding money, the player would need to think critically and carefully before taking actions on deploying, transporting or creating units.

Iteration 3

The 3rd time we play, we decided to make use of purple hex by allowing it to give the players an ability upon claiming.

With many amazing abilities coming to mind, it was hard to balance them all to fit the game, therefore we decided on 4 abilities first to balance the game before adding more in the future.
The 4 abilities that were chosen fitted into the game as there are 2 buff, 1 debuff as well as 1 destructive move allowing a sparse way for players to approach the battlefield and create opportunities using the powers.
The abilities are:
Mortar, Intimidations, Supply Drop and Motivate
These abilities were carefully thought out through many tests to help determine the cooldown and their effects in the game.

Iteration 4

In the 4th iteration of the game, we decided to add mountain obstacles as well as an extra ability that can change the way players approach and move around the map
With version 2 of the board, players now need to move units and place them strategically to help defend as well as attack, making the game more. intense.

With iteration 4 being made, we decided to replace energy meter bar with a timer, to allow players who have a large army move more instead of restrictions upon them. This also forces the game to be played at a certain pace which is a downside but also allow the game to have a time limit, as well as making it easier to track than having energy meter.

With the addition of the 5th ability being turrets, and a max placement of 3, players are able to create choke points to help defend their base areas and create opportunities to counterattack.

We also decided to give planes a unique ability to occupy mountain hexes, with the purpose of making Planes act as a scout unit to help capture hexes quickly, but weak.

Future Changes

Something we wish to change in the future would be how the map is set up, we wish the map to be more options for players to choose from using a dice. As well as adding more abilities and variants to units for a more sparse gameplay experience. We also wish to add in facilities and buildings such as factories that could help players create additional resources, speeding up the game.
