HexWar
Postmortem
Group 6
Our game HexWar is a 1v1 real-time artillery strategy game, with heavy inspirations from Sid Meier's Civilizations genre. In this game, the players are given starting resources and have to use them and expand their army to fight and destroy the enemy's team base. As the game have different troops and a robust fighting mechanic, the player can choose to approach a problem/situation according to their playstyle and liking.
Another feature of our game that heavily enforce player's critical thinking, is the additions of power hexes, as well as terrain hexes. With certain troops able to pass the terrain hexes, while power hexes can be captured by anyone to obtain abilities, or to stock up extra vital resources for deployments.
During the creation of the game, we have found that restricting player movements using terrain hexes, created more opportunities for the player to create a "chokepoint", where they can heavily reinforce that one particular area to defend, or to have them prepare for an attack. With planes also getting a unique ability to cross terrain hexes, giving them the purpose of being a scout unit able to capture points fast or to pick off lone enemies.
This image is shown as how the games are played with no terrain on the map.
Without terrain hexes, player movements are free and able to move separately. This discourage the point of the game which are to place units defensively and offensively, which makes the game much more interesting and critically important to place them vitally.
